How Renewable Nodes collects, processes, and presents global renewable energy data.
Renewable Nodes aggregates data from multiple authoritative sources to provide comprehensive coverage of the global energy transition.
| Source | Data Provided | Update Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Ember Climate | Electricity generation by source, share percentages, total generation | Monthly/Quarterly |
| IRENA | Installed renewable capacity (GW), capacity targets | Annually |
| IEA | Energy balances, policy frameworks, historical trends | Annually |
| National Energy Agencies | Country-specific targets, policy commitments | As published |
| World Bank | Population data for per-capita calculations | Annually |
Our automated pipeline queries the Ember Climate API twice daily to check for new data. When new data is available, it is processed and the dashboard updates automatically. The most recent complete data year is displayed for each country (typically the previous calendar year).
The renewable energy share percentage represents the proportion of total electricity generation from renewable sources. Renewable sources include solar, wind, hydroelectric, bioenergy, and geothermal/other renewables. Nuclear energy is tracked separately and can be included via the "Include Nuclear" toggle to show total clean energy share.
Each country's energy mix is broken down into five categories: Solar, Wind, Hydro, Geothermal, and Biomass/Other. Percentages represent each source's share of total electricity generation, not just the renewable portion.
Historical trend data covers up to 7 years for each country, subject to data availability. Year-over-year changes are calculated from the two most recent data points. The total growth figure represents the change from the earliest to the latest available data point.
| Grade | Renewable Share | Description |
|---|---|---|
| A+ | 90% or above | Global leader in renewable energy |
| A | 75โ89% | Very high renewable share |
| B+ | 60โ74% | Strong renewable adoption |
| B | 45โ59% | Above average |
| C+ | 30โ44% | Moderate progress |
| C | 20โ29% | Below average |
| D | 10โ19% | Early stage transition |
| F | Below 10% | Minimal renewable adoption |
Renewable energy targets are sourced from official government commitments, Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), and national energy plans. Target progress is calculated as the percentage of the target that has been achieved based on current renewable share. Targets are periodically reviewed and updated as countries revise their commitments.
Renewable Nodes currently tracks 93+ countries and territories worldwide, representing over 98% of global electricity generation. Coverage is determined by data availability from primary sources.
Coverage varies by region. The number of countries tracked depends on data availability from Ember Climate and other primary sources. As of the latest update:
| Region | Countries with Targets | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Europe | 45 | Includes EU-27, UK, EEA, Western Balkans, Eastern Europe |
| Asia | 42 | Includes Middle East, Central and Southeast Asia |
| Africa | 47 | Sub-Saharan and North Africa |
| Americas | 26 | North, Central, South America, and Caribbean |
| Oceania | 4 | Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Papua New Guinea |
Not all countries with targets have complete generation data available. The dashboard only displays countries for which Ember has sufficient electricity generation data.
The data pipeline runs automatically twice daily (every 12 hours). When source data is updated (typically monthly for Ember, annually for IRENA/IEA), changes are reflected on the dashboard within 12 hours. The "Last update" timestamp in the footer indicates the most recent data check.
Note: The "data year" badge on each country profile (e.g., "2024 data") refers to the year the generation statistics cover, not when they were published. There is a natural lag between the data year and publication โ this is standard across all energy data platforms.
While we strive for accuracy, users should be aware of several limitations. Data availability varies by country, with some nations reporting with longer delays than others. Small island nations and territories may have incomplete or estimated data. Capacity figures may not perfectly align with generation shares due to capacity factors.
